Sentimental value is worth a lot.
Sorry to get back so late but I can give a little more info. 1940 on the top of the receiver is indeed the year of manufacture. 42 is the Manufacturer's Code and yours was made at MAUSER WERKE AG, ORBERNDORF a/N. Manufacturer Codes changed throughout the war years. Example being in 1941 the Orberndorf factory code changed to byf. In 1934 it was S/42K. Your serial number, 8012a shows it was a pretty early made rifle during 1940.
TheWaA655 is what is known as the waffenamt. Every factory had a waffenamt inspector, that would inspect each part and completed weapon. Then place his stamp on them. They were assigned their own inspection stamp and even if they were reassigned to another factory they used the same stamp.
Orberndorf produced Mausers are some of the most sought after as it was one of the first factories, along with J P SAUER, to begin production of the K98. Yours would be highly prized depending on condition and in original form, and all matching. Any 8mm Mauser that was made during the war years, especially one handed down from your grandfather, and shoots well, should be highly prized. Of course this is just my opinion. Enjoy. You have, what many consider, the best bolt gun ever made.
