Spend the money and go ahead and get a lined holster too.It will last for many many years,is basically a one time purchase, and will not wear the finish of the pistol as bad.
I prefer to use a cross draw fitted holster. It can be used as a cross draw or strong side.If worn on the strong side the pistol rides high with a front cant.Model I use most is #CS212H.My fave.
Small of the back rigs(FBI rigs/draw) are good too but make sitting difficult with a full size 1911.
Retention is up to you.Personally for CCW I just use a fitted holster with no thumb breaks. No problems here.
If its open carry I use a thumb break holster for added security(against gun grab).
Avoid nylon and kydex holsters on anything but a stainless gun.Finish wear is increased with these holsters.Trust me.
I only use Kydex for my comp guns.
