OK, fellas, I've been bitten by "that" bug -- I want a Garand. Trouble is, I am just beginning to scratch the surface of wading through all the data - the drawing numbers, serial numbers, types, etc. Added to this is the fact that I'm pretty much a newbie to firearms in general, although I do own a Mauser K98k. Is this starting to sound like a recipe for disaster?
I'm not looking for a "collector" gun necessarily, but I do want a safe, decent piece. I don't belong to any clubs, so CMP is not an option at this stage.
How do you tell if an M1 is worth considering from the outside, without breaking it down? The thing I fear most is the dreaded welded receiver.
Any tips or anecdotes from your own trials and tribulations would be appreciated. Thanks.
