I have two M91/30's, one is arsenal refinished and looks like a new gun. The other, an Ishevsk, looks like a war veteran, stock is rough with numerous dings and scratches. Blueing is about 50%, however all of the numbers look original and match ( the bolt however has a different three digit number on it's underside), there is also a Z or an N branded on the bolt side of the stock/butt about in the middle, it looks to be in a circle. The problem I have is some painted markings on the opposite side of the stock. There are three painted markings, the first two are in an off-white paint. The first is a plus, not clean but roughly marked with a paintbrush, is at the top of the butt of the stock. What is either a 5 or an S, is at the end of the butt of the stock (it looks more like a 5 than an S). A third mark, that was obviously made prior to the other two because they partially cover it, it is in a grey-green colored paint and looks like a question mark or a long narrow S.
My question, does anyone have any markings like these on thier Mosin's or does anyone know what they mean? An educated guess would help, this is actually my favorite of the two rifle's the bolt is tight but the action is easy and very smooth, the barrel and rifling looks very good. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
