I went out this weekend with my Czech 98/22, my Yugo M48 and 120 rds of S&B SPCE ammo. What a great afternoon, both weapons performed superbly. My father and brother were on hand with thier .22's, after a couple of little cracks from thier rifles I unlimbered the Yugo...BOOM what an awesome sound. The recoil was powerful and authoritative but comfortable in a viseral kind of way, the M48's way letting everybody know it wasn't a toy. My dad and brother then commenced to sighting thier .22's in from a stand. I broke out the Czech and it followed in the Yugo footstep's with a mighty boom when it fired but less barrel elevation from the recoil, it was more of a straight back push. With both weapons I was able to stay on target, not close groups but respectable, without the use of a stand of any kind. I fired both weapons from standing, kneeling and sitting positions (I decided to save the prone course of fire for my next trip). The primary difference, other than the recoil, in the two guns is the length of the bolt pull. I could cycle the bolt on the M48 without removing it from my shoulder or cheek, the 98/22 I had to move my cheek because of the full length mauser bolt. Both actions worked smoothly throughout, the Yugo tended to act up if you weren't forceful enough with it. Needless to say my first time firing these rifles was great fun, sorely missed from my days in the Navy. I'll be taking two Mosin Nagant's M91/30's on my next shoot and I hope to have either an M38 or an M44 by then as well. What I'm really looking for is an actual K98k to go with my other mausers, I can't consider my collection complete one or more.
