My wife bought me a 91/30 for christmas. She usually is not exactly behind the collection so this was kind of a big deal. Unfortunately the front sight is missing. It is an Ishvek from 1940 in nice shape aside from the damage caused by some rather clumsy treatment apparently by someone trying to remove the bayonet with a hammer. Replacing the sight isnt a problem as I already have a spare, but the rear half of the dovetail is broken off. I am trying to be discrete about the repair, (I dont want her thinking she missed something like that) but am uncertain how to proceed. If I had made this purchase id put a good d&t mount on and scope it. My best guess at this point is to file the old dovetail off, and fit a small block with a new dovetail (a bit of forging hammer tech). I could TIG the whole thing up and file the dovetail back where it should be, but fear that I would warp the barrel doing so. I have the same fear regarding brazing/soldering. I also dont trust solder with the abuse that 7.62x54 can dish out. Were it a machine id just replace the half of the dovetail, but i'm fairly certain I can't get screws/pins that small that could actually hold. Any sugestions on how to proceed?
